Air Conditioning Supplies & Isolators — Commercial Unit

Distribution Boards Norwich

Air conditioning is one of the loads that most often gets bolted onto whatever spare way happened to be free in the board — and then trips every time the compressor starts. On this commercial unit the condensers were given properly designed circuits from the outset.

From the board out

Circuits were taken from the site’s Eaton distribution board, sized against the starting current of the units rather than their running current, which is where these installations usually come unstuck. Each circuit was run out to its condenser position in containment, labelled at both ends so a future engineer knows exactly what feeds what.

Local isolation at every unit

Every condenser was given its own external rotary isolator mounted alongside it. That is not a nicety — an air conditioning engineer arriving to service a unit needs to make it dead at the unit itself, and a plant that can only be isolated from a board somewhere inside the building is a plant that gets worked on live. The isolators are weatherproof, clearly marked and within reach of the equipment.

The whole installation was tested and certified. Straightforward work, but the kind where the design decisions — circuit sizing, containment, and local isolation — are what determines whether the system is reliable and safe to maintain for the next fifteen years.
