Electric roller shutters need a proper supply behind them — a correctly rated fused spur, a local isolator and cabling that will survive years of motor duty. We install and replace roller shutter spurs on shops, industrial units, garages and homes across Norfolk and Suffolk, and repair the tired, worn or badly-sited ones that have started tripping.

The bit behind the shutter that nobody sees

An electric roller shutter is only as reliable as the supply feeding it. Most shutters are fed from a fused connection unit — a spur — with a local isolator nearby so the motor can be safely switched off for servicing. It's a small piece of work, but it gets specified wrong more often than almost anything else we're called to. Undersized cable, a fuse rated for the wrong motor, no accessible means of isolation, or a spur mounted where it takes a knock every time stock goes past: all of them turn into nuisance tripping, burnt-out fittings and an engineer who can't safely work on the shutter when it fails.

Where we fit them

Shop fronts and retail units, industrial and warehouse roller doors, garage and workshop shutters, and increasingly on homes — security shutters and solar shading shutters on windows and patio doors. The principle is the same whatever the building: a correctly rated supply, a fused spur sized to the motor, and an isolator sited where someone can actually reach it. On commercial premises we'll also make sure the shutter's isolation arrangement suits how the building is used, so a fire exit shutter or a public-facing door can be released and made safe quickly.

Replacing worn and failed spurs

Roller shutter spurs live a harder life than most accessories. They sit at low level near doorways, they're exposed to weather and impact, and the motor's starting current works the contacts every single cycle. Over years the switch mechanism wears, the fuse holder loses tension and the terminals loosen — you get intermittent operation, a shutter that stops halfway, or a spur that's warm to the touch. If you have several shutters on a site, they tend to wear at a similar rate, so we'll often check and replace them together rather than come back four times.

New shutter going in?

If you're having shutters installed, the supply is usually not included by the shutter company — they'll fit and commission the shutter, but they need a live, correctly protected spur waiting for them. Get us in before they arrive and the installation goes in one visit instead of two. Tell us how many shutters, roughly where they'll sit and what motors are specified, and we'll run the supplies, fit the spurs and isolators, and leave everything tested and certified ready for their engineer.
