Why pigeons love your solar panels
The gap between a roof-mounted solar panel and the tiles is warm, dry and sheltered from predators — close to perfect for nesting pigeons. Once a pair moves in, others follow, and within a season you can have a full colony living under the array. It's one of the most common problems we're called out to on otherwise healthy solar installations, and it has nothing to do with how well the system was fitted.
The damage birds actually cause
It isn't just mess. Droppings are acidic and build up on the panels and roof, cutting generation and staining tiles and render. Nesting material blocks gutters and downpipes, leading to damp and overflow. Birds peck and dislodge the DC cabling and connectors that run between panels, which can cause faults, isolator trips and — at worst — arcing. And the noise, feathers and fouling around the eaves become a genuine nuisance and a hygiene concern. Left alone, a bird infestation can quietly cost you both generation and roof repairs.
Why one bird can cost you a whole string
This is the part most homeowners don't expect. Pigeons perch along the bottom edge of the panels and foul the cells directly beneath them — and solar panels are wired in series, in what's called a string. Shade one cell badly enough and you don't just lose that cell's output; you throttle every panel on that string, because the current has to pass through the weakest link. Bypass diodes limit the worst of it, but a heavy, baked-on dropping in the wrong place can still knock a meaningful chunk off your generation.
On a larger array split across several strings you might only lose a portion. On a smaller domestic system running as a single string — which is how a lot of older installations were built — one well-placed mess can drag down the entire roof. It's why owners often report their system "just stopped performing" with no fault code and nothing wrong electrically. Before you pay for inverter diagnostics, it's worth getting someone up there to look at the panels.
How we bird-proof a solar array
We fit a discreet galvanised steel mesh skirt around the entire perimeter of the panels, held in place with purpose-made solar panel clips. Crucially, nothing is drilled into the panels or the roof — the clips grip the panel frame, so your panels, tiles and manufacturer's warranty are left intact, and the air gap that keeps the panels cool is preserved. Where birds are also roosting on the ridge or other perches, we add stainless steel anti-roosting spike strips. Before any mesh goes on, we clear out the accumulated nesting material and fouling so you're not sealing in the problem.
That clear-out matters more than it sounds. Nests get built directly on top of the DC cabling running between the panels, packing dry straw and feathers tightly around live conductors and connectors in a space that already runs warm in summer. We check the cabling, connectors and isolators as we clear, and flag anything that's been chafed or pulled loose — so the mesh goes on over a system we know is sound, rather than hiding a fault under it.
Signs you need bird proofing
Pigeons regularly sitting on or around the array; droppings streaking the panels, tiles or walls below; cooing and scratching noises from the roof; feathers and debris collecting in the gutters; or a drop in your system's output with no electrical fault found. If you can see daylight and movement under the panel edges, birds can almost certainly get in.
